Getting Rocky!

Getting Rocky!

On our last full day of school, we piled on to the bus and headed to Clemson.  Once on the campus, we enjoyed the South Carolina Botanical Gardens and the Bob Campbell Geology Museum!  All of the facilities were such a wonderful treat, with room to run, nature to explore, and lots of information to learn!

What an exhausting trip!

Yearbook Signing

Yearbook Signing

As the end of the year narrowed in on us, we took a moment to recognize the friendships we have created and the memories that were made.  As we received our 2011-2012 Yearbooks, the Primary School gathered to sign yearbooks with our friends!

Marshmallow War!

Marshmallow War!

Well, I’m pretty sure that no one will ever say these first graders didn’t read enough!  We finished off our year with a final reading challenge – read 250 pages and join in a marshmallow war!  The kids kept their nose in the books and were well rewarded for their work!

Arcade Day

Arcade Day

Our First Graders have a lot to be proud of this week!  In October, we read the book Miss Daisy is Crazy by Dan Gutman, the first of the My Weird School series.  In the story, the main character A.J. has a group of hilarious friends, as well as some friends that he loves to hate.  His teacher, Miss Daisy, doesn’t know anything and his principal, Mr. Klutz, is always looking to challenge the students.  His first challenge – reading!  If the students can read the allotted number of pages, then they can have an arcade night.

What an excellent idea!  Our First Grade students sure thought so.  So, we started planning.  First, we sent a letter to Ms. B.J. to ask permission.  Then, we created a chart to tally our progress, reading logs for our friends, and shared our enthusiasm with each of the classes.  Our Carolina Prep Reading Challenge began on November 1, 2011.  All of the Primary School students worked hard, reading pages each night and submitting their progress every Friday.

Finally, we reached our goal – 300,000 pages!  We were all so excited, and then came the fun part!  Arcade Day!!!  We acquired 5 gaming consoles to be hooked up to each SmartBoard, loaded games onto each of the computers in the computer lab, allowed personal electronic devices to venture into school for the day, played a computer in the auditorium, layer out board games in the back of the auditorium, and loaded the music room up with lots of snacks!  It was a great time with all of our friends!

Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Happy Mother’s Day!!!

In First Grade, we have 9 superheroes.  Nine individuals that can solve all problems, can mend all wounds, can conquer the world with a smile on their face!  Yep, our Moms!  We are so grateful for all that our Moms do all year long and took a moment to recognize with a Mother’s Day Breakfast and a gift for our moms!

Earth Materials Hunt

Earth Materials Hunt

In preparation for our next unit, the students needed a large collection of Earth materials to explore, classify, and sort.  Luckily, our school has lots of grounds for us to explore, and a vast amount of materials to gather as well!  We found many times of non-living materials of different sizes, shapes, and colors!

Smooth rocks from below the stage!

Rich soil.

Drop Everything and Read

Drop Everything and Read

After our star performance, our performers were a little “sluggish.”  With this in mind, we rolled out of bed and came straight to school in our pajamas.  Then, we scheduled ourselves lots of time to sit back, relax, and enjoy some quality literature.  With two administrators, three parents, and a class of our older peers, we heard many fantastic stories!

Ms. Miller stopped by with one of her favorites, The Napping House.

Some of us were ready for a nap!

We also got to hear some of the favorites from when our parents were children!

Mrs. B.J. read her favorite, The Giving Tree, with help from her son!
